COURSE REVIEW: Postgraduate Diploma in Education

pgde, diploma in education
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), also called Postgraduate Certificate in Education, is a necessary certificate earned in order to become a professional teacher.
As an educationist, I understand the truth of what it means to be a trained teacher and not just having the talents for teaching.
In Nigeria, the PDGE programme is designed for bachelor’s degree and HND graduates who want to become full fledge teachers. While you may naturally have a passion and talent to teach, in the civil service and some private institution, there is a limit to how far you can be promoted.
PDGE students are taught different education courses like sociology, psychology and philosophy of education. There are also courses that give hands on practical teaching experience i.e micro teaching and teaching practice. Before the completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme, student must write a project/thesis. It usually has a higher course unit load.
With a PGDE certifcate, you can proceed for a MED (master degree in education). Many Nigerian university offer PGDE, on full and part time basis.
Also, the National Teachers Institute offers PGDE at her numerous satellite campuses across Nigeria. Depending on the institution PGDE has a duration of between 9 months and 18 months.
